A historic vote in Switzerland will now make firms financially and legally liable for human rights violations or environmental damage. Although passed in the small European country, the law will affect their supply chains anywhere in the world.
“The new law seeks to enforce these standards, allowing victims of alleged human rights violations or environmental damage to sue Swiss companies in Swiss courts. The companies would have to prove they had taken all necessary measures to prevent any harm.”
Although there are mixed feelings towards the law, it puts the emphasis on fair business trade on companies looking to do business in Switzerland. Expectations on businesses ‘doing the right thing’ are not a new thing, gone are the days of evil corporations with megalomaniac tendencies. Despite the new ‘woke’ corporate environment, some bad apples still operate in plain sight.
